For a power steering leak Honest-1 estimated $800 for replacement of a hose and a pump. I took my vehicle to another shop, which replaced the hose for $269 and the problem is fixed. Honest-1 wanted to charge me over $500 to replace a part (the pump) that didn't need to be replaced. Plus, labor, parts and fluid prices were all higher in Honest-1's estimate than I actually paid at the other shop.
Cary, Thanks for your time on the phone today. As I mentioned to you, I think we made a mistake in how we handled this. We should have asked for permission to run diagnostic testing on your power steering system before we made a recommendation to replace the pump and the hose. The technician who did the inspection on your system saw a large amount of fluid and thought the pump was bad based on where the leak was coming from. The last thing we want is to have you pay for an unnecessary repair. The technician stated to me he would have tested the pump after replacing the hose, but obviously I can't promise you that would have happened. My apologies for this - I've had a discussion with my staff regarding the problem with this and how our processes broke down in this situation. We work hard to win customer's trust and that certainly didn't happen in this situation. Thanks again for your time and consideration.
